Ed.: The Inspired Stays series highlights hotels we love around Italy. Each property is independently reviewed by an Italy Magazine writer, who is generally hosted on a complimentary basis. Our contributors do not accept compensation or gifts in exchange for specific types of coverage. We only showcase properties we would genuinely recommend overall.
Why we love it
With a sleek white-on-white design, a pool overlooking the sea, and a Michelin-starred restaurant, this member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World immerses you in Amalfi Coast splendor without the Amalfi Coast crowds.
What to expect
The newest luxury hotel to open on the Amalfi Coast, Furore Grand Hotel has a boutique sensibility and feels rooted in the destination. It’s a quiet, peaceful retreat ideal for relaxing and soaking up the sun and coastal vibes. I especially loved the main pool with its cushy sun beds that seem to float in the water.
Background
Owner Pietro Irollo de Lutiis and his brothers Giuliano and Alessandro invested a reported €30 million and spent four years renovating the building (previously another hotel). Though it’s small and intimate, with just 35 rooms and suites, it has plenty to offer, including two restaurants, two outdoor pools and a luxurious spa.
Location, location, location
As its name suggests, the hotel is located in Furore, a small fishing village between Praiano and Conca dei Marini. Designated one of the Borghi Più Belli d’Italia, the town is best known for the Fiordo di Furore, a picturesque fjord with a small pebble beach at the bottom. (Just be warned that the hike to reach it from the hotel involves more than 1,000 steps.) There’s not much else around that you can walk to, but the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service to Amalfi, which is 20 minutes away, four times per day. Positano is about an hour away.
Where you’ll sleep
Every room has a balcony with a sea view, hand-painted tiles from the nearby town of Vietri Sul Mare, smart TVs, a Nespresso machine and premium bath products by Ortigia. For more space, upgrade to a Corner Suite or a Signature Pool Suite, which has a private plunge pool. Some rooms have white tiles and pops of colors in the fabrics; my suite had colorful tiles on the floor and an otherwise neutral color scheme. A private pool with a small garden was the cherry on top.
Dining & drinks
The owners tapped Michelin-starred chef Enrico Bartolini to create the menus throughout the property. At Aquarasa, the casual all-day dining outlet by the pool, my husband and I ate the most addictive zucchini alla scapece I’ve ever had, alongside a fresh caprese salad and fritto misto. At Bluh Furore, the Michelin-starred restaurant, creative presentations and interesting flavor combinations elevated locally inspired dishes. Breakfast, which is served a la carte in Bluh Furore, includes a selection of delicious pastries, as well as eggs and other sweet and savory dishes.
Service notes
The staff were welcoming and professional, making sure we had water for our hike to the fjord and reserving a table and pickup service at the nearby restaurant Baccofurore. Special mention goes to Giovanna, the friendly sommelier who guided us through a tasting featuring wines by small local wineries and suggested pairings for our dinner at Bluh.
Spa time
The pampering Petramare spa extends over 32,000 square feet, both indoors and outdoors. Inside, there are treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, steam room, whirlpool and cold plunge pool. Outside, there’s a Kneipp circuit featuring pools with hot and cold water. My husband and I had a relaxing couples massage and spent some time in the saunas and whirlpool — much appreciated after a challenging hike to reach the fjord.
Family perks
Little guests are welcomed with soft toys, coloring books and other amenities. Special beds and food are available for pets.
